The Twenty Percent
Pareto Principle: 20% of your customers will generate 80% of your sales
Targeting that 20%: In my past assignment done of interviewing an entrepreneur and asking him questions about his restaurant Snappers, I decided to contact him once again for this assignment as he was an enjoyable entrepreneur to work with. I will find out who his 20% is, who he thinks his 20% is, and whether he is right or not (customer feedback?).
I was unable to obtain recordings of the entrepreneur and costumers because this restaurant is in Palm Harbor, Florida and I am still in Gainesville at the time of this assignment. However, I called the owner from Snappers and phone interviewed him. As for the customers, I had one of my friends from home interview three customers and send me video recordings of them. This is what I got:
1) Find a business owner and talk to them about their customers.
Me: "At Snappers, who would you say is your main market? Who are your target customers?"
Paul: "Well I'll definitely have to say the locals. Snappers is surrounded by neighborhoods and as a small mom and pops place, the locals love it here. Everyone knows each other, I take time to learn about my customers...the hospitality here is just so intimate."
M: "Would you say there are any unmet needs of your customers?"
P: "I know Snappers is not perfect, but most of our customers leave very satisfied...I hope that answers your question."
M: "What are your customer's demographics? What would you say an average customer looks like / tend to be like?"
P: "Well, as a bar also we tend to attract a crowd a bit more older. We also have great deals and are near many neighborhoods with an older population. We get a lot of families here with kids and a lot of older folks."
M: "What kind of media do your customers use?"
P: "Everyone has their cellphone and I would say FaceBook is big too."
2) Next, go and talk to 3 'target customers' -- using the demographics/psychographics the entrepreneur described.
Customer #1: Man with three kids and a wife.
Me: "Is this your first time eating at Snappers?"
Customer: "Nope! My family and I come here all the time."
Me: "As a regular customer here, would you say you have any unmet needs?"
Customer: "Hmm, I'll have to think...oh wait, I'd love there to be more outside seating where people aren't smoking so my kids can sit there too. That's the only thing."
Me: "Great thanks for your time."
Customer #2: Older couple in their 60s.
Me: "Is this your first time eating at Snappers?"
Customer: "No."
Me: "As a regular customer here, would you say you have any unmet needs?"
Customer: "My soup isn't here yet. Hahaha no service here is great we have been coming here for 10 years now, Paul is great."
Me: "Aw good thank you guys for your time."
Customer #3: Father and son in his teens.
Me: "Is this your first time eating at Snappers?"
Customer: "No, we live in the neighborhood right behind here. Come here quite often."
Me: "As a regular customer here, would you say you have any unmet needs?"
Customer: "Nope."
Me: "Awesome, thanks for your time."
3) Reflect.
Based off of the interviews from the owner and the customers, it seems to me that they're truly aren't any major problems at Snappers. The costumers seemed to love Snappers and were all locals for the most part. I'm sure there are things that can be improved, but overall Snappers seems to be doing just great! It's been opened for 25 years now too. Paul must be doing something right.
It seems as if the restaurant has a loyal customer base that keeps it in business. The owner must have done a great job at satisfying his daily customers and locals for this. For a restaurant to be open for 25 years must mean something too! Great job on the owners part for keeping loyal customer base. Go and check out the entrepreneur I interviewed. http://ufrob.blogspot.com/2016/02/rob-twenty-percent.html
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica! I really enjoyed reading your 80/20 assignment. Snappers seems like a place I would love to check out if I ever make it out to Palm Harbor. It seems that there is a very loyal customer base because the restaurant is primarily popular with the locals. People are overall very satisfied with the restaurant and I think it doesn’t have much of a need for improvement. Great job!
ReplyDeleteJessica! You make Snappers sound like a great family friendly restaurant and I would love to visit it one day. It is obvious that you worked hard on this assignment going out of your way to interview an entrepreneur outside the local gainesville area. This is different from the other blog posts I have read and clearly displays your strengths as an entrepreneur. I did not complete this assignment but feel free to check out my blog and my half way reflection here: http://entweekly.blogspot.com/2016/02/half-way-reflection.html
ReplyDeleteJessica,
ReplyDeleteThe Snappers restaurant seems to be a very friendly place. Also, it seems like Snappers is a local place that will succeed because it is so well-known within the community. The target market that you are looking to reach seems to be within the same type of 20%. Please check out my blog at: http://usingmediaforgodsglory.blogspot.com/
Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI believe you did a great job interviewing this owner and the customers of this restaurant/bar. It seems that “Snappers” provide a good environment and service to their customers. It is clear that they are satisfied with the service they receive and some indicated that they’ve been going to this restaurant for quite a long time now. I would suggest you to go around and interview the owner and the customers and share the recordings with us because in this way we would be able to have a complete sense of satisfaction coming from the customer. All in all, I think you did a great job!
Check out my post and let me know what you think about it!

Jessica,
ReplyDeleteGreat job interviewing snappers and giving us a look of Snappers. Based off reading it is obvious that the customers were extremely satisfied besides little issues, i.e. outdoor seating. One thing I would say is next time try and get recordings of interviewing whomever it may be just to help us the commenters get a better understanding by visually seeing or hearing the person being interviewed.Overall Snappers is aware of the demographic that is key to the survival of there restaurant, which is essential to know as a small business.
Snapper's does have a strong customer base. It's kind of cool to see them pop up here because I'm a local and know the place, but I'm curious why you chose to interview someone long distance when you had options in Gainesville. Or did I misunderstand you? If you're from around here, you may appreciate my post (http://adventuresinent.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-twenty-percent-evolved-or-theres.html?m=1); it features a Dunedin business.
ReplyDeleteDo you post from your phone or a tablet? I noticed you have costumers instead of customers, which is something Swype would do to me! Maybe double check your post for those kinds of errors in the future, though I was totally digging the thought that you interviewed costumers.
I'm glad you attempted the assignment, I just think you could have gotten more out of personal, live interviews.
Hi Jessica! I think you did a great job with this assignment and you picked a place where the customers seemed to have genuine answers! The only critique I have would be to maybe try to get video or audio recordings next time as that was part of the instructions. But based off of your interviews it seems like Paul truly cares about Snapper's and the customer base. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica! I really enjoyed reading your post. I think you did a great job in picking a place that is so important to the local people and is doing so well in the community. A tip for future reference: there is an app called TapeACall if you ever want to record a phone interview. I'm a journalism student and I use this all the time when interviewing sources for a story. Other than that, great job with the assignment! Here is a link to my blog: http://morganjohnsonblog.blogspot.com/?m=1
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this interview. I think you did a really great job. Having the recordings would make it much better. Hopefully you can get the recordings working. Sounds like you met some great people. I'll have to check this place out!
